Sunday 9th May

Today, we will have Nature Study. Our first sighting of a Kingfisher, A Yellow Wagtail, a Vixen sitting in the sun watching her six cubs playing and a herd of deer - and all of this before 9.30am!
We arrived in sunshine and clear skies at Bunbury and found that the top gates were leaking badly (or very well)around the heel posts and in the centre of the gates. This feature of the Upper Shroppie continued for the next four locks, it put me in mind of the Kennet and Avon, at least BW are showing a degree of consistency.

Then it was the unusual Iron lock at Beeston, a herd of deer on the hill opposite and the signal box, Beeston Castle and Tarporley, the name board almost bigger than the box itself. Beeston Castle is perched on a rock and cliff and the view of it from the canal reminded us of Edinburgh Castle from the west end of Princes Street.

We moored at Mill farm Aqueduct, removed the outside chairs from storage and sat in the sun which remained shining until lunchtime. Could this be the start of summer?
