THURSDAY. At Kildwick
The 2008 journey thus far: 235 Locks & 344.5 Miles & 41 Swing\Lift Bridges
Journeys using bus pass: 16
We moved on to Kildwick, less than two miles away. We took the bus into Skipton with a view to collecting information about buses and destinations. During our walkabout, we met Margaret and Keith from NB.Striding Edge, who had the same idea. We found that our wonderful chippie of six years ago had been converted to an Indian take away; we had better luck with the butcher for the pork pies and currant slices, they are still in business. The window cleaner had finished their windows and was having a pie and chat inside. Myra asked the assistant which chippie to use as our preferred one had shut. A lively, almost heated discussion then ensued between the assistant and the window cleaner, as to which was the best chippie. We now have two from which to choose! We also found a branch of Wild’s bakers, which had the wonderful pasties in Bingley and Haworth. We bought two pasties, and then thought that as we were already in Skipton, we may as well take a bus trip today. We went to Grassington, and were not disappointed. It is a lovely village surrounded by beautiful countryside. The trip alone would have been worth taking, the views from the bus were wonderful. We found a seat at the top of the village looking over the rooftops to the hills. We sat and had a picnic, being scrutinised by three passing groups of accompanied school children. We managed to walk off some of the pasties by having a good look around; some interesting alleyways and cobbles everywhere. There was a beach in the village square, with sand, deckchairs and a small palm type tree. It was a remnant of the recent village festival which we were assured had been ‘a good ‘un’. The journey back to Skipton was another lovely one as the views were if anything, better in the opposite direction. Arriving at the bus station, we went straight on to the Kildwick bus, which was very good – it started raining a few minutes after we were back on ‘Martlet’.
After supper, we enjoyed a slow walk around Kildwick, and looked around the gravestones in the churchyard.
Weather warm, sunny spells, some rain showers.
